Created and directed by Andrew D’Eloia, AD Hoops is
essentially a series of basketball clinics for children from the first grade
all the way up to 8th grade. Beginning on Friday March 16th,
the clinics operate on three evenings each in March, April and May, as well as
five dates in June.
One-hour
sessions, the clinics are conducted by age group: 1st to 3rd
graders, boys and girls together, attend
a 6-7 pm session, 4th grade to 6th attend a separate
6-7pm period.
For 7th
and 8th graders, the sessions are separated into girls and boys
divisions, and those run from 8 to 9 pm.
There
are ‘elite’ classes, too, for ‘advanced’ players; they start at 9 pm.
The
principles that guide Mr. D’Eloia’s work with the kids seem entirely
appropriate: his training classes strive to teach the youngsters how to
practice effectively [“every time you practice, you make progress” is how he
puts it.]; he provides, in his words, “specific techniques that enhance
performance.”
He
makes a valid point that many players now participate on multiple teams, and
don’t have time to “work on techniques and skills.” That’s what these clinics
teach.
Mr.
D’Eloia’s been in the basketball-training arena a long time: he’s put in time
with the Villanova Basketball Camp, St. Anthony’s, Hoop Start USA. Presently
he’s an assistant basketball coach at Hunter College in New York City. He
attended Hobart College, and amassed 1,600 points in his college career.
On his
staff for the clinics is a Strength and Conditioning Coach, A. Davis, as well.
All
clinic sessions are at Bishop Ford High School, and cost is a very reasonable
$10 a session. A child can attend one, several or all of the sessions. If
nothing else, it’s a great opportunity for a child to get some exercise, and
maybe even learn some life lessons as well.
