|
The Park Slope Food Coop was founded in 1973 when a group of citizens who lived in Park Slope in the borough of Brooklyn decided there was a better, more affordable way to get local produce and other foods. With this desire and the commitment to Cooperation, the Food Coop was born.
Here’s how the Food Coop works: in order to shop at the Food Coop, a person must be a working member. Membership is open to anyone and the first step is to attend an orientation session. The basics to officially join after attending an orientation: one must present photo ID and separate proof of one's residence, commit to a a work shift the equivalent of 2 hours and 45 minutes (recurring on the same day and time every four weeks) and make 2 different member payments.
The first payment is a non-refundable fee of $25 is required within four weeks of signing up. There is also a $100 amount that members are required to invest in the Coop (payment plans are available if needed and members who are receiving certain types of assistance may have their membership payments reduced). The "investment" portion of one's membership payments is refundable once membership has been officially ended.
Members are expected to volunteer one time for the equivalent 2 hours and 45 minutes once every four weeks. In exchange members enjoy discounts of 20 to 40 percent on all the goods in the Food Coop. In addition to deeply discounted groceries, all members have a voice and can choose to be a part of the decisions that are made related to the Food Coop by participating in the monthly General Meeting.
