History of Park Slope

Featured Story
Park Slope, Brooklyn was a major settlement for immigrants to New York.
The History of Park Slope, Brooklyn, New York

Learning the history of a place will help you get to know the neighborhood's character as well as how the area came to be what it is today. Park Slope is no different, and the area has a long and interesting history that dates back centuries.

Park Slope history begins long before it gained that moniker. Hundreds of years ago, the Lenape people, a Native American tribe, inhabited the land. In the 1600s, Dutch colonists settled the area and farmed in the region. In the early part of the American Revolutionary War, the area of Park Slope was central in the early stages of the Battle of Long Island, also known as the Battle of Brooklyn. You can even visit the sight of this battle in Prospect Park!

Over the next century, developers began buying up the farmland in the area. Many wealthy New Yorkers began to flock to the area, building a number of Victorian styled mansions near the park in an area known as the Gold Coast. Many of the mansions are still standing in this now historic district within Park Slope.

You will even find some important nuggets for sports history enthusiasts in Park Slope. The area was the home of Washington Park, where the Brooklyn Atlantics played. The Atlantics would later become the Brooklyn Dodgers.

During the 1950s, change came to the area. Park Slope was in a decline, and fewer wealthy residents were living there. In recent years, this has changed and the higher income singles and families are again making their way to this suburban paradise.

As you can see, Park Slope history and Brooklyn history are not only interesting, but also have played important roles in the way in which the current community is viewed. Today, the area is one of the most affluent and desirable neighborhoods in all of New York City.
